Cempo Merah is one among many types of local red rice that is popular in Yogyakarta and Central Java. It is said that this rice was originated from Campa (West Coast of Indochina), brought to Java by Admiral Cheng Ho in the 14th century and have been adapted so well in Java that it can be cultivated three times per year compared to the one in Campa. As any other red rice, this rice contains selenium useful to prevent free radical that can damage cell membranes and thus can help to prevent cancers and other degenerative illnesses. Cempo Merah wholegrain helps to lower blood sugar level. When cooked, it has big round textures, corny flavor. It is suitable for fried rice and gravy meals.
